Self-Efficacy and Citizen Engagement in Development: Experimental Evidence from Tanzania

Abstract Recent studies of efforts to increase citizen engagement in local governance through information campaigns report mixed results. We consider whether low levels self-efficacy beliefs limit engagement, especially among poor citizens countries. Citizens may be caught an “efficacy trap” which limits their realization better public goods provision. describe results from a series experimental conducted with over 2,200 rural Tanzania, we compare the effects standard Validated Participation (VP), intervention designed socially validate citizens’ participation. implement staged approach research, seeking balance ethical and cost concerns about field experimentation. In our main analyses, find that VP did not lead increased or more active behaviors relative informational treatments. Nonetheless, some promising evidence for follow-up qualitative study teachers. conclude by discussing lessons this research directions future investigation possible role traps development.
